Dancing on Ice is a primetime competitive show, pairing 12 celebrities with professional ice skaters to compete against each other in a gruellingly contest to conquer the ice.
Co-presented by Philip Schofield and Christine Bleakley, dancing pairs are trained by the undisputed British darlings of the ice rink, Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean.
With contestants picked from across the entertainment industry including singers, soap actors, reality TV stars and sporting personalities, natural ability tends to vary greatly – leading to entertaining, funny and sometimes awe-inspiring viewing.
This year’s competitors include Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, squeaky-voiced comedian Joe Pasquale, X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Coronation Street actress Samia Ghadie.
A theme dictates each week’s performances, with every show opened by a dazzling display of skating prowess by Torvill and Dean themselves – showing how it should be done. Each weekly performance is choreographed by the professional skater of each duo, and judged by a panel of four well-known faces, each looking for technical ability, dance skills, daring moves (the much-feared ‘headbanger’, anyone?) and overall finesse.
Points up to a perfect 10 are awarded by head judge Robin Cousins, ‘bad guy’ choreographer Jason Gardiner, former Olympian Karen Barber and ex Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts.
With injuries, tears and the occasional tantrum, viewers are shown celebrities tested to the limit of their nerves and fitness as routines become increasingly demanding week-on-week. Bring on the sparkly glamour, dramatic turns and unexpected talent!
