Match of the Day is the main football programme on the BBC. The show features highlights of the day from the matches played in England’s top-flight divisions, focusing primarily on the Premier League. It first aired in 1964 and is currently broadcast from Media City in Salford Quays, Manchester.
The popular host of the show is ex-England international Gary Lineker, and he is regularly joined by three other former internationals, former Scotland and Liverpool defender Alan Hansen, former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer and ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland defender Mark Lawrenson. The pundits analyse the key points after the highlights of each game are screened.
It also features post-match interviews with football managers and players.
Match of the Day is one of the BBC’s longest-running programmes, and former presenters include David Coleman and Jimmy Hill.
One of the most popular presenters was Des Lynam. He joined Match of the Day as a commentator in 1979 and later took over as host from Jimmy Hill. Lynam left the show in 1999.
Match of the Day was screened for the first time on August 22, 1964. Just one match was shown on that first edition - a First Division game between Liverpool and Arsenal played at Liverpool’s ground, Anfield. The final score was Liverpool 3, Arsenal 2.
The programme’s current theme music has won a cult following and makes Match of the Day instantly recognisable. It was written especially for the show in 1970 by Barry Stoller. The tune has become popular with football fans across the UK.
