The Best TV of 2013 Preview - Part 1
It may seem as though January is a bit of a downer following the festivities of the Christmas period; the weather is rubbish, all of our New Year resolutions have already faltered and there's nothing to look forward to anytime soon.
However, here at UK Proxy Server we love everything about the start of a new year - why? Because it means there are a whole bunch of great new shows to tantalise our telly taste buds. Over the coming weeks we are going to be previewing the TV events that are exercising our excitement the most.
What: Utopia | Where: C4, 4OD | When: Tuesdays, starting 15th January, 10 p.m. GMT
Judging by the trailers for Channel 4's latest mysterious looking thriller (they do like mysterious looking thrillers don't they?), Utopia looks to be in a similar mould to Misfits, and this offering from 'Pulling' writer Dennis Kelly also stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett from the popular Channel 4 drama.
However Utopia, which also stars Paul Higgins (The Thick of It), Alexandra Roach (The Iron Lady) and Neil Maskell (Kill List), is looking a lot darker than that particular super hero adventure, as a small group of strangers accidently gain possession of an original manuscript of the fabled and mysterious graphic novel, 'The Utopia Experiments'. This leads to the group being pursued by 'The Network', a shadowy organisation who will stop at nothing to keep the real meaning a secret.
What: The Following | Where: Sky Atlantic, Sky Go | When: Tuesdays, starting 22nd January
Tuesday evenings are shaping up to be pretty exciting (and maybe a little terrifying) as Sky Atlantic also premieres another massive US import this month. Starring Kevin Bacon, most recently of those 4G adverts, The Following tells the gory and bone-chilling story of serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who, having escaped Death Row, begins a brand new reign of terror. The FBI then call on former agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon) who put Carroll behind bars nearly a decade earlier.
The Following is from Kevin Williamson, the writer of Scream and cult favourite True Blood, and it promises to be yet another incredible entry in Sky Atlantic's already impressive back catalogue.
What: Broadchurch | Where: ITV1, ITV Player | When: February
From thrills and spills to something a little more sombre, Broadchurch follows the impact the death of a young child has on a small coastal community. What is getting us most interested in this new 8-part drama is the absolutely stunning cast list headed up by David Tennant, Olivia Colman (Peep Show, Tyrannosaur) and Vicky McClure (This is England).
Written and created by Chris Chibnall, whose CV includes work on Torchwood, Doctor Who and Law & Order: UK, Broadchurch promises to be a tough but unmissable watch this Winter.
