As a spin-off from the popular Big Brother show, Celebrity Big Brother is equally as popular.

Though it has a mercifully shorter run than its original cousin – three weeks compared to three months – the programme has still managed to attract some big names from the world of show business.

Celebrity Big Brother began life as a one-off programme to coincide with the BBC's Comic Relief effort in 2001 but hit a chord with the public and TV bosses ordered a series.

Contestants enter the Big Brother House to a huge fanfare and publicity and they then undertake tasks to win points so the housemates can get fed.

The participants are isolated from the world during their stint in the house and only 'Big Brother' will speak to them. They also speak with him/her in the diary room where tasks are handed out and any problems resolved.

The aim of the show is for contestants to avoid being voted out by the general public and ultimately win a big cash prize for the charity of their choice.

However, with cameras monitoring their every move and conversation the feuds and fall-outs are what viewers tune in for though the programme hit the headlines when some of those were accused of racism in the 2010 ruin of the show, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the show.

Celebrity Big Brother has been broadcast most years from its inception in 2001 until 2012 when two series were broadcast.

From the beginning, Celebrity Big Brother was broadcast on Channel 4, with various spin-off versions and extra footage being aired on E4, until falling ratings and a highly-publicised racism controversy led to the broadcaster cancelling the series in 2010.

Celebrity Big Brother, and Big Brother, were then snapped up by Channel 5 who hired former winner of Big Brother series eight, Brian Dowling to front the programme. However, he has now been replaced with Emma Willis.
