Comedy starring actor and comedian (Brendan O'Carroll) playing brash and loud-mouthed Irish matriarch Agnes Brown. The show is a fly-on- the-wall look the highs and lows of the Brown family life. Available on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer
Mrs Brown’s six children play the key role in her life – and it’s their trials and tribulations that give the show laughs and pathos.
Mrs Brown’s daughter is Cathy Brown (Jennifer Gibney), a middle-aged loner always looking for Mr Right, only for her mother to thwart her chance of happiness.
Grandad Brown (Dermot O'Neill) is Mrs Brown’s father-in-law, who she often mocks.
Mark Brown (Pat "Pepsi" Shields) is the eldest son, who lives with wife Betty and son, Bono. He never learned to read or write, for which Mrs Brown takes the blame.
Betty Brown (Amanda Woods) is married to Mark. Betty is strong-minded and not afraid to tell her mother-in-law a few home truths.
Dermot Brown (Paddy Houlihan) is the youngest son. Dermot often finds himself in trouble with the law, usually because of involvement in some half-baked scheme with his friend Buster Brady (Danny O' Carroll).
Maria Brown (Fiona O'Carroll) is another daughter-in-law, married to Dermot. She is a nurse from a wealthy family background that irks Mrs Brown, who struggles financially. She and Dermot have triplet boys, named after three of The Beatles: John, George and Ringo.
Hairdresser Rory Brown (Rory Cowan) is Mrs Brown’s gay son, although he acts straight in front of his mum even though she knows he is gay.
Dino Doyle (Gary Hollywood) is Rory's Scottish boyfriend and business partner.
Winnie McGoogan (Eilish O'Carroll) lives next door and is Mrs Brown’s best friend. If they are not in Foley's Bar together, they usually drink tea and gossip at Mrs Brown’s kitchen table.
Mrs Brown's Boys first appeared in Ireland on radio. A series of books written by Brendan O'Carroll followed.
The books, entitled The Mammy, The Chisellers, The Granny, and The Young Wan, were first published in Ireland in the 1990s.
In 2000, The Mammy was adapted into he film ‘Agnes Browne’ with actress Anjelica Huston playing the lead role. Following the success of the film, Brendan wrote the TV series based on the books, in which he played Mrs Browne - now spelled 'Brown'.
