Navy crime fighting team bring killers, kidnappers and terrorists to justice in this fast-paced action series with laughs as well. Watch on 5 and available on Demand 5
NCIS – the Naval Criminal Investigative Service – investigate crime involving marines and sailors in the US.
The show is a spin-off from a TV show called JAG and began life in 2003.
Since then, NCIS has managed to build an enthusiastic following and create another successful spin-off - NCIS: Los Angeles, starring Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J.
NCIS was originally called ‘Navy NCIS’ though producers dropped the term ‘Navy’ from the title after the first series.
NCIS follows the work of a fictional team of agents who work in the Major Case Response Team in Washington DC.
The show stands apart from others because of the original characters and their quirks and often funny moments within each show.
The plots tend to be original and character-driven, focussing on crimes that bring more than a year’s in jail as punishment, like murder, kidnap and terrorism.
The team is led by crusty former marine with a heart of gold under a tough exterior, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). He is supported by rich kid former Baltimore detective Anthony ‘Tony’ DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and technology geek Timothy McGee (Sean Murray).
Israeli Mossad agent Ziva (Cote de Pablo) and Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander) have also played long term members of the team.
The team’s Chief Medical Examiner is Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard (David McCallum) who has an eye for analysing a crime scene and working out what happened to the victim.
In addition to their usual assignments the team has also been tasked with solving the death of a Presidential military aide, a hidden bomb on a US warship, terrorist threats and the death of a celebrity on a reality TV show filmed on a Marine Corps base.
NCIS is still a popular show and has picked up numerous awards, including the US’s favourite show in 2011 and had the highest American viewing figures for 2012.
NCIS is broadcast by Channel 5 in the UK with repeats on 5USA and some episodes available on their catch-up service, Demand5
