Sitcom New Girl follows the antics of Jess (Zooey Deschanel) as she falls out with her boyfriend and moves in with three men she has never met after they advertise for a new flatmate.
The show has been well-received by critics and Zooey Deschanel has won awards for her performance as oddball Jess. The programme itself has been nominated for several Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.
Jess is a bubbly teacher who means well but her life lacks direction and the series follows her ups and downs and interaction with the three male strangers.
Supported by her best friend Cece, played by Hannah Simone, Jess struggles through life trying to find, and keep, love and help her flatmates with their problems too.
She lives with Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris ) and directionless barman Nick (Jake Johnson). It is Nick’s character that Jess finds she has the most in common with and as the series progresses their obvious mutual attraction creates a 'will they won't they scenario’.
For the most part, Jess's flatmates find her behaviour odd – she has a habit of breaking into song - and they endeavour to support her as best they can – usually.
The supporting cast have various back stories including Nick who is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, Schmidt really fancies himself as a ladies man and Winston is a former professional basketball struggling to come to terms with is new lifestyle.
The beautiful Cece is a fashion model and Jess’s best friend since childhood and is overly-protective of her.
New Girl is a well-scripted and funny show which has caught on with the public's imagination and has led to the more shows being ordered.
It is shown in the UK on Channel 4 and E4 with older shows being available on Channel 4's on-demand video service 4oD.
