Scott and Bailey follows the story of DC Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) and DC Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) – detectives with the Manchester Metropolitan Police.
DC Bailey is a career woman in her 30s. Young, impulsive and ambitious, she has a complicated personal life, throwing her from crisis to crisis which at times threatens her career.
She becomes embroiled in an unwise affair with womanising barrister Nick Savage (Rupert Graves), which leads to compelling viewing as Bailey discovers more about his life, involving blackmail and violent decisions. Later, she finds another subject of her affections with PC Sean McCartney (Sean McGuire).
Although older, wiser and more level-headed, DC Scott is in a similar situation when it comes to men. Married with two teenage children, she has an affair with DS Andy Roper (Nicholas Gleaves), who falls hopelessly in love with her. Throughout the series, her affair and its consequences threaten her career.
Scott and Bailey are headed up on the Major Incident Team by DCI Gill Murray (Amelia Bullmore) – in Rachel Bailey’s eyes, she is ‘Godzilla’.
A strongly female-centric series, the idea for Scott and Bailey came from Suranne Jones and Sally Lindsay, wanting to create a crime show where women didn’t play second fiddle to the men - instead, being strong figures involved in the main action.
The series has received generally good critical reception for its balanced portrayal of both police and personal lives, pitting the drama of murder investigations against sometimes messy but realistic home lives.
