US sitcom about a group of four nerds that has become one of the world's biggest comedy shows.
First airing in 2007, the show features two roommates, Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), who happen to work at the same university.
Both are geeks with Leonard being an experimental physicist while Sheldon is a theoretical physicist. They are joined by fellow nerds and university colleagues Howard Wolowitzand (Simon Helberg), an aerospace engineer, and astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar).
They are all extremely intelligent but socially awkward – for instance, Raj cannot speak to women unless he has drunk a lot of alcohol.
Love interest comes in the form of Penny (Kaley Cuoco), who lives across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment.
Penny is an aspiring but unsuccessful actress who works as a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory restaurant.
As the series have progressed some of the minor roles have taken on leads such as Stuart Bloom, the hard-up owner of their favourite comic book store and neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, who is now Sheldon’s girlfriend.
The scripts are checked for accuracy by scientific experts who also help to provide dialogue and mathematic equations for the show’s stars to work on.
Several of the Big Bang actors also appeared on Roseanne - Johnny Galecki, Sara Gilbert, and Laurie Metcalf, who plays Sheldon's mother, Mary Cooper.
The Big Bang Theory explores the group’s relationships and highlights the ‘oddness’ of Sheldon’s character.
Sheldon, from Texas, was a child prodigy who has an eidetic memory which means he can conjure obscure facts and references on cue.
Initially, The Big Bang Theory had Leonard and Penny have a ‘will they, won’t they’ relationship and then they did get together for a series it didn’t work out. The later series have highlighted their friendship and potential to rekindle their romance.
