The Mindy Project is an American comedy show that features Mindy Kaling in the lead and follows her life as an obstetrician and gynaecologist and her dismal love life.
This is the first major US TV series which features a South Asian American woman as the show’s lead though the character’s name is changed to Mindy Lahiri.
The Mindy Project is inspired by Mindy’s mother who has worked for most of her life as an obstetrician and gynaecologist but the comparison probably ends there.
That’s because the character that Mindy’s plays in the show is a hopeless romantic and she dreams of finding happiness – much like a romantic comedy heroine would do since Mindy has watched every romantic comedy that has ever been made.
As a result, Mindy believes that the girl always gets the guy which unfortunately means that she often ends up with the wrong guy despite better efforts.
The Mindy Project shows how Mindy copes with a stressful job and follows her adventures in trying to find a partner – she is increasingly keen to rescue her love life before friends and colleagues act on her behalf to resolve it for her.
The Mindy Project is also unusual in that it is often politically incorrect while being funny at the same time.
Mindy’s shares her medical practice with two fellow doctors, who do not make life easy for her.
They are Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) who criticises Mindy constantly despite secretly admiring her work and British doctor Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks) for whom everything comes easily.
There’s also a male nurse on the staff, who is a reformed convict who, despite its best efforts, always gets into trouble.
The show’s other characters include an excitable receptionist and an absent-minded nurse who is obsessed with gossip and beauty tips.
