Waterloo Road is a British drama series, which was first aired in the UK on BBC One in 2006.
The story revolves around the daily lives of the school's students and teachers, dealing with a wide mix of social problems ranging from sex, abortion and divorce to child abuse and suicide.
Based on a fictional school catering for students aged between 11 and 18, the comprehensive school is notorious for being a scrapheap - and that applies to teachers as well as pupils. Yet despite the fact that Waterloo Road has a poor record of achievement, it has scraped through a number of inspections to remain open against all the odds.
To kick start the series, an eight-part initial run of programmes was made in 2005 and broadcast early 2006. And the popularity of the series has ensure that it has enjoyed an extended run.
The first episode of Waterloo Road featured characters like headmaster Jack Rimmer (Jason Merrells) and pastoral care teacher Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin).
When it was first broadcast, Waterloo Road was set in in Rochdale in the North of England. However, in 2012, in a move which surprised many, the location of the show was moved to a school in Greenock, Scotland.
For fans of past characters of the show, the BBC launched an online spin-off series in 2010. Waterloo Road Reunited ‘the series’ featured now grown-up former characters, and focuses on their how their lives unfolded after leaving school.
Waterloo Road attracts an average audience of around five million viewers and is watched by many people around the globe via the BBC networks, and other independent TV channels.
